A 1961 Volkswagen Beetle With a Soul of Her Own - Owner: Sandra D

Some Volkswagens arrive in our lives with a plan. Others, like Mabel, a charming 1961 Beetle, arrive by chance, over a phone call, sight unseen, and end up becoming part of your heart. For her owner, the love affair with Beetles began long before Mabel rolled into the driveway, stretching all the way back to a raspberry red ’66.

“I was 17 when my high-school friend Jamie bought that ’66 Beetle,” she recalls. “It was my first introduction to VWs, and it sparked something in me.” Even before that, Beetles drifted through her childhood memories in flashes, classic little bugs buzzing by while her parents playfully punched each other in the old Punch Buggy tradition. No vivid details, just the joyful presence of Volkswagens weaving into her life.

That spark never faded. Over the years she has owned four vintage Volkswagens, each marking a different chapter. Age 17 brought a silver 1976 Beetle. Age 19 came a gold Karmann Edition convertible, all original, which proudly placed second in its class at the Great Canadian Bug Show at VW’s Scarborough headquarters in the early 1990s. Decades later came a clean white 1970 convertible, and in 2021, the one that feels destined: Mabel, her 1961 Beetle.

Mabel appeared unexpectedly on a VW WhatsApp forum, posted for sale in a burst of messages. Without hesitation, she dialed the number, bought the car at the asking price, and sealed the deal before a wave of other calls flooded in. Picking her up meant a 2.5-hour drive to Prince Edward County, where Mabel had been parked beneath a tree for two months. Yet the moment the key turned, she fired up and drove home like a faithful old friend.

Her history is a little blurry, but fate offered a surprise. “I actually met the second owner by chance at a car show. He spotted some details and said, ‘Hey… I used to own that car!’” Moments like that remind you how Volkswagens keep their stories alive, passing through hands but never losing their spirit.

“I’m an original type of girl,” she says, and Mabel reflects that philosophy perfectly. Rather than modifications or wild accessories, this Beetle is cared for with a gentle, respectful touch meant to preserve her authenticity. Maintenance has included familiar Beetle rituals such as valve adjustments, brake service and oil changes, along with a fresh headliner, new bumpers, repaired heater channels, a generator and a new ignition switch. The iconic parcel tray and roof rack were already in place. “I just pay the bills,” she jokes. Future plans may include new seat coverings, but her goal is simple: keep Mabel in her original glory.

Owning a vintage Volkswagen is about more than spark plugs, shows, and Sunday drives. It is about people. In her area, a tight-knit VW group meets weekly for car shows, breakfast cruises, Friday coffee nights, and road trips to major events such as Niagara GermanAire, Sharon Temple Museum, and Kars on King. This past year, several members even ventured to One Crazy Weekend in Las Vegas. “That was outstanding!” she says.

Many say every car has a price. But Mabel is not just a car, and her owner is not just a collector. This is a bond. “I have no plans to sell her. I love her beyond measure. They say everything is for sale at the right price… but this one is locked to my soul.” For her, Volkswagen ownership is beautifully simple: “Owning a VW is something to be cherished. It is not only about keeping history alive, it is about the wonderful people you meet along the way.” And for anyone who has ever loved a Beetle, Mabel’s story rings true: sometimes the best cars aren’t just driven, they are felt.
